I bought fresh potatoes at the local farm stand this summer and they were heavenly. So I want to grow potatoes.
Recently, I opened my bag of potatoes and found one had sprouted. Not just a little eye, but an actual green leaf. So I decided to plant it in a pot and see what happens. (That brown lump you see is a rock, not a potato. I put rocks in pots to keep the cats (and squirrels) from digging. The potato is under the soil.)
I read up on it and it seems that they are one of the most disease prone crop we have. This means they are treated heavily with fungicides. I have also read that if you grow them in your home garden, and they develop a disease, there is a fear it will mutate into a new contagion and get into the commercial crop. So they really don't want people messing with potatoes.
I promise to be careful, Girl Scout's honor, if I eventually have a garden.
