December 2 - Waltz Ball

We went to the Austrian Viennese Waltz ball in at the ARmy Navy Club in Virginia.  But Matt is on the injured reserve and we were not able to dance all night.  he gave it his all but after about half dozen dances, we had to stop.  So we ate and drank champagne and socialized.

There are tremors in the Viennese waltzing community.  When we first started, there were numerous balls.  Unfortunately, the International Club ball is no longer one we want to attend.  The dance is in the Women in the Arts Museum and the marble floor just kills our feet and knees.  Even worse, the dancers have stopped going and all that is left is amateurs that really are clueless.  My toes have decided they do not want to be stepped on with spike heels.

The National Society of Arts and Letters  did not have dance in November this year due to lack of funds.  Then we received a letter from the American Austrian Society in Wilmington, Delaware that announced they would not be having a ball and the Society would be dissolving for lack of membership.

So the next ball is not until the OAS Ball in February.  That is pretty much it.

We are fast losing dancing venues.  The same is true of our dance clubs/societies. The Big Band Society is gone, the members slowly dying off.  Hollywood Ballroom started out interesting but is not really much fun and has not been for years.  Other dance venues are specialized to certain dances.  If you want to salsa all night and do nothing else, then there is a place to go.  But if you like variety, forget it.

From all of this, the lack of interest in clubs by younger people is so readily apparent.  We are not joiners.  My dad belonged to numerous clubs.  It was the way people socialized.  No longer.  It is sad but I am not really a joiner either so I am to blame as much as anyone else.
